create an equation to solve
(area of the square) - (area of the circle) = Area of shaded region
s^{2} - \pi r^2 = A
s= side of square (28 in)
r = radius (1/2 diameter. diameter = 28. 28/2= 14)
Substitute known values

28^(2) - (3.14) 14^2 = A
784-615.44= 168.56 in^2
