How did the physical environment of panama affect the building of the canal

Panama was a very tropical place that had many forests, jungles, many wild animals and bugs. As we built the canal many people got yellow fever which was a virus from mosquitoes and it led to many deaths. With the building of the canal it helped bring wealth and commerce to the area.
