Yochanan walked from home to the bus stop at an average speed pf 5 mph.he immediately got on his school bus and traveled at an average speed of 60 mph until he got to school. The total distance from his home is 35 miles, and the entire trip took 1.5 hours. The following system of equations represents this:

5x+60y+35
x+y=1.5
Yochanan walked how many miles?

Yochanan walked 5 miles.

If you solve the equations, you will get 1 for x and 0.5 for y. You can do this will substitution or the elimination method.

If he walked for 1 hour at a speed of 5 miles per hour, then he walked for 5 miles.

Answer:

5 miles walking

30 miles on the bus

35 miles walked in total.

Explanation:

Hi, to answer this question we have to analyze the equations given:

5x +60y =35 (first equation)

Speed = distance /time

Distance = speed x time

5mph x + 60mph y= 35miles

Where:

  • x= time spent from home to the bus
  • y = time spent from the bus to the school

x + y = 1.5 (second equation)

Solving for x on the first equation

x = 1.5-y

Replacing x in the second equation

5(1.5-y) +60y= 35

7.5 -5y +60y =35

60y -5y= 35-7.5

55y =27.5

y= 27.5/55 =0.5 hours

Replacing y in the first equation

x= 1.5-y

x= 1.5- (0.5)

x = 1 hours

Finally, we have to multiply each time by its speed to obtain the distance for each case.

5 x =5 mph (1h) = 5 miles walking

60 y = 60 mph (0.5h) = 30 miles on the bus

Yochanan walked 35 miles in total.
