So first, I like to add all the fractions first.

3/4 + 1/2

make sure both fractions have common denominator, (in this case multiply 1/2 in the numerator and denominator by 2)

You will get:

3/4+2/4 = 5/4 = 1 and 1/4

Then, you add 2 to 1 and 1/4 to get:

3 and 1/4.
