The reason that woodrow wilson won the presidency in 1912 was

I believe the answer is: because Taft and Roosevelt split the Republican vote

At first, Roosevelt actually supported Taft and stand behind his cabinet. But as Taft's policies grow more conservative throughout the years, Roosevelt who is more of a center leaning candidate choose to run on his own, which split the republican votes into two and contributed to wilson's victory.
