The War Powers Act allows the president to send troops to a country or territory for 60 days without Congressional approval. However, the president must give Congress a 48 hour notification of this movement. If the president does not get Congressional approval during this 60 day window, then they have a 30 day window to withdraw the troops. This law helps to limit the power of the executive branch.
