How does young stem gives mechanical support to the plant body?

One is through turgidity. This occurs before ground tissue ( collenchyma and sclerenchyma cells) become well developed to give structural support to the plant as it grows bigger. The xylem tissue (composed of rigid tissue) of the young plant helps render this support and also maintaining osmotic turgidity of the surrounding plant cells.

The young stem gets mechanical support from the cells found in it. The sclerenchyma and collenchyma are responsible for the support to the plant body. The walls of sclerenchyma are thick as compared to collenchyma and they build up in a uniform layer around the entire margin of cells. They are usually found associated with the term mechanical support. They are found in stem and leaf veins. Collenchyma are mostly found in the areas that are young and grow rapidly.
