The goal of this attack was to destroy the elite and burn the cities which were built on the backs of slaves. By destroying the homes of the government leaders and leading Confederates, the Union took away resources and support for the Confederate cause.

The Union focused on attacking military and civilian targets in an effort to further demoralize the South. The primary way that this was down was with "total warfare." This meant that Union forces would burn or destroy anything that they came across. This would leave nothing for the Southern troops to use. No shelters, food, or transportation. This style is most exemplified by General Sherman and his "March to the Sea."
