Setup Equation:

3/4e + 1/8w + 7/8e + 3/4w

Combine like terms:

For East: 3/4 + 7/8 = 6/8 + 7/8 = 13/8e = 1 5/8e

For West: 3/4 + 1/8 = 6/8 + 1/8 = 7/8w;

For Both (fraction): 1 5/8e + 7/8w

For Both (decimal): 1.625e + 0.875w

In Conclusion:

The bird went 1.625 miles east and 0.875 mile west

Hope this helps
