I believe the answer is: responded to them.

As a human, we have an inherited tendency to mimic the behaviors that displayed by other members of the social group in order to adapt (most primates have this tendency).
It's mimicking does not only apply to how we respond to others, it basically apply to every actions that may exist during socialization process including how we talk, how we dress, how we act during a certain social situation, etc.
