To get you started: Look at the bottom 4 white squares. Each square represents an area of 5 sq. meters. Thus, these 4 white squares represent an area of 4(5 sq m) = 20 sq m.

Use the same method to calculate the remaining area. Hint: I count 7 full squares in this "remaining area."

First find the area in terms of square units. The shaded area is going to be the area of the rectangle minus the unshaded area inside the rectangle. The area of the rectangle is 5*7 which is 35. For the area of the unshaded part, you can just count the squares to get 11. 35 - 11 is 24 so the area is 24 units squared. Every square unit is equal to 5 square meters, so multiply that by five to get 120 meters squared.
