Shakespeare builds suspense in the very beginning of the play, which drives the tragic them of "Romeo and Juliet." From the very start, we learn that Rome and Juliet are "star-crossed" lovers, and that the play will end in death. Since Shakespeare tells us early on what will happen, he creates a sense of suspense throughout the rest of the play, as we wonder how the tragedy will unfold.
