Although Shackleton's mission to cross Antarctica by foot failed, the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition is hailed as a milestone in expedition history. Why?

Even though Shackleton was not able to accomplish his primary goal, he was able to, out of all odds, bring all of his members back alive. The epic adventure started after the Expedition's ship, "Endurance" was crushed, and they had to return to the nearest land for help (approximately 700 miles away i believe), with only 3 life-boats, limited resources, and little time
