B. Israel gained territory that had been set aside for the Palestinians.
D. About 750,000 Palestinians fled Israel.
Israel gained control of the territory that had been designated for it by the United Nations' partition plan, as well as large portions of what had been planned for Palestine. The Palestinians call the 1948 war "the catastrophe" (al-Nakba) because it left them stateless. Many became refugees in surrounding regions. In 1949, Israel signed separate armistice agreements with various Arab nations they had defeated in the war.
