The correct answer is (d). While women were able to serve within their own branches of service in the military during WWII, for example the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), they could not go into combat (only men could). Since the majority of eligible men were thus in combat, women back home went into the workforce to perform the men's jobs and thus keep the economy going.
