It was the first time she had been home since her mother’s death. The once sunny home was now dark and full of dust. Thick black curtains were pulled over the always open windows, blocking out any rays of sunshine that threatened to come in. Her father, like usual, was no where to be seen but she knew where to look if she wanted to find him. Her mother was the only piece keeping her tied to this house, to this town, but now that she was gone Amelia hoped this would be the last time she stepped foot in this place.
Exposition is the background information on characters and settings, usually found in the beginning. This short paragraph explains who the main character is, where she is within the setting, and what has happened before the story really starts. This paragraph shows any other characters we might see as well and can set the feel of the overall story.
