Dear sister:
This place is the hell on earth but my friends and I are being optimistic that the war is going to end soon. I am writing from a trench. A trench is a long narrow ditch dug into the ground. We have to wake very early in the morning and we have to be quick to identify if the Germans are moving. This place is very muddy and sometimes it rains a lot. I wake up very early at 5 o'clock in the morning then I have a rum ration at about 5:30. At 7:00 we have breakfast usually bacon and tea. We can sleep just one hour a night. Most of my friends are sleepy all the time and we are always hungry. We have to wear masks because Germans throw mustard gas once in a whie. Beloved sister I don't want to overwhelm you with the miseries of this terrible war. I am sure I will survive and we will be together very soon.
