Who was the enemy of the USA during the Cold War?

The Soviet Union. Tensions began from back in WW2. Soon the whole world was effected by the Red Scare. This is because the SU's communism was a threat to worldwide democracy.

It was the Soviet Union. They both had different ideological ideas which led to the conflict between them.
