The answer is cirques. The type of structure that is formed as glaciers scoop out rocks leaving hollow basins at their high end at the top of a valley is cirques. It is an amphitheater-shaped basin with precipitous walls, at the head of a glacial valley. It generally results from erosion beneath the bergschrund of a glacier.
