To rent a canoe, the cost is $3 for the oars and life preserver, plus $5 an hour for the canoe. Sketch the graph that would model the cost of renting a canoe.

The formula would be C= 5h+3 or 5x+3
the three represents the cost of the oars and life jacket the 5x represents the 5 dollars per hour h or x. graph attached

Answer:

Let x be an hour and y be the cost of renting a canoe.

As per the statement:

To rent a canoe, the cost is $3 for the oars and life preserver, plus $5 an hour for the canoe.

"$5 an hour" translates to 5x

"$3 for the oars and life preserver plus $5 an hour for the canoe" translated to : 3 +5x

⇒y = 3+5x

or

y = 5x+3 .....[1]

Graph:

x-intercept: The graph that crosses the x-axis:

Substitute the value of y =0 and solve for x:

0 = 5x+3

Subtract 3 from both sides we have;

-3 = 5x

Divide both sides by 5 we get;

-0.6 = x

x-intercept = (-0.6, 0)

y-intercept: The graph that crosses the y-axis:

Substitute the value of x=0 and solve for y:

y= 5(0)+3

⇒y = 3

y-intercept = (0, 3)

You can see the sketch of the model that represents the cost of renting a canoe i.e y = 5x +3
