first things first. Think of the word
PEMDAS meaning parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction.
First you would check for parenthesis which you do (3x7) so multiply both which come out to 21.
We can skip exponents and multiplication since we have already done it or may not have it. Next is division. Multiply 40 divide by 1 which is 40 now add 3 so 43. And lastly subtract 7-5=2
Your new equation is 43-21+2. So your answer comes out to 24! Hoped this helped.

First, multiply the numbers in the parentheses, which is 3 times 7 is 21.
Then divide 40 by 1. 40/1 = 40
40 plus 3 is 43, 43 minus 21 is 22.
PLus 7 minus 5 is 24.
