The main advantage that the North had over the South at the beginning of the war was the fact that the North had a lot more resources available. The North was significantly more industrialized than the South. This means that they had more factories, more railroads, more people and more ships than the South. It also meant that with these resources, they could most likely fight for longer. These resources were indeed very significant in determining how the war developed.
