The price of an item is reduced by 20% of its original price. A week later it is reduced by 30% of the reduced price. The cashier informs you that there has been a total reduction of 50%. Is the cashier using percentages correctly? If not, what is the actual percent reduction from the original price?

Price before discount = 100%

20% Discount = 20%

Price after 20% discount = 100 - 20 = 80%

30% Discount = 30% 0f 80% = 0.3 x 80% = 24%

Total discount = 20% + 24% = 44%

Answer: No, the cashier is not using percentage correctly. There is a total of 44% reduction from the original price only.
