As we see, the second coordinate is the same for both points (towns), so distance is the same as the difference between first coordinate, so:

d = 9 - 4 = 5 miles (if 1 unit = 1 mile, but this part of picture is cut off).

Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the line segment connecting (4,-6) and (9,-5). The change in x is 5 and the change in y is 1. Thus, the
hypotenuse is sqrt(5^2 + 1^2) = sqrt(26) (answer).
