to find the area of a rectangle the formula is length times width

rectangle A = l x w
= 24 x 20
= 480
480 is the area of rectangle A

rectangle B's width is 12 meters less than rectangle A
since the width of rectangle A is 20 you take 20 and subtract 12

20 - 12 = 8

the width of rectangle B is 8

now since the question said that rectangle A and B both have the same area you put 480 into the formula

and since we now have the width of rectangle B we can figure out the length

Area = l x w

480 = length x 8

480 divided by 8 is 60

60 is rectangle B's length

so the answer is b)
