1) Divide the large shape into smaller rectangles, then find the area of each of the small rectangles and add them together. There are three rectangles (see image), let's call them A, B, and C. Use the equation:
A=lw where A = area, l=length, w=width.

The area of A = 14*3 = 42
ft^(2).
The area of B = (10+14)*8 = 192
ft^(2).
The area of C = 5*17 = 85
ft^(2).

Add these three areas together. Total area of shape = 42+192+85 = 319
ft^(2).

B) To find the area of the shaded portion, you must find the area of the larger rectangle and subtract the area of the smaller rectangle from it.

The area of the large rectangle is 22*40 = 880
ft^(2).
The area of the small rectangle is 16*34 = 544
ft^(2).

Subtract the small rectangle from the large one: 880-544 = 336
ft^(2).
