An apartment building currently has rented x apartments with two occupants and 17 apartments with one occupant. The apartment building has 89 total occupants. 2x + 17 = 89

2x + 17 = 89
2x = 89-17
2x = 72
x = 72/2
x = 36

To find our answer we need to solve the equality given in your question.

2x + 17 = 89
Subtract 17 from both sides

2x = 72
Divide both sides by 2

x = 72 / 2 = 36.
Therefore there are 36 double-occupied apartments.
