Directions: Read each of the case studies located on the activities page in the course and choose one of the case studies to complete the refusal sequence. Complete the case scenario by indicating how you would refuse to be involved in the situation. Include all eight steps of the refusal sequence, and use the format indicated below for each step.

Pick A Case Scenario Number:

Case Study 1

You are at the mall with a couple of your friends, and some teenagers of questionable reputation approach your group. One of your friends knows these teens and makes the appropriate introductions. You and your friends are invited to go for a ride with the teens and everyone has accepted except you. You have a feeling inside that you should not go with them. You really do not trust them. Write a scenario to complete this role play, indicating their pressure on you and your refusal.

Case Study 2
One of the most popular girls/boys you know, someone who you never thought would give you a second glance, comes up to you and invites you to a party at her/his house this weekend. This person tells you how much fun the party will be and he/she really wants you to come. You know this person has a reputation for having wild parties that include drugs, sex, and alcohol. Your parents would definitely not want you to attend the party. On the other hand, this is your chance to be a part of the "in crowd," and you know one of your friends will cover for you with your parents. The person asks if you are going to be there. Complete this role play by working through the process and indicate your ultimate decision.

Case Study 3
You and Melissa go to a party in Melissa's car. Melissa ditches you when she spots Bill (a guy she met an hour earlier at the 7-11). You feel self-conscious now that you are on your own, and an intoxicated person begins harassing you. You go searching for Melissa and find her in a bedroom with Bill. Now, you are being trapped by the intoxicated person who is trying to force you to do things you do not want to do. In addition, you realize that you are in a house where everyone is taking drugs and you are without a ride home. Complete this role play by working through the process and indicate your ultimate decision.

Case Scenario Questions for Case Study 1:
1. What are they asking me to do and why?
They are asking me to get into a strangers car. They are asking me to do this so that they all can have an adventure together.

2. Label what they are asking you to do (i.e. illegal, dangerous, etc.).
This is a dangerous situation- you don't know who these people are, you don't know how long this person has been driving- or even if their car is safe- you are putting your life in a strangers hands.
3. Determine the consequences if you get caught or if you participate in this activity.
If you decide to go- you could be risking your life and the lives of your friends. 4. Communicate my refusal:
I would say β€œHey guys, I would love to go but I just got a text from my Mom and she has to come here in anyway so she's going to meet me here in 15 minutes.β€œ
