The table below shows two types of electromagnetic waves and three random applications of electromagnetic waves.

Type of Wave Applications of Waves
Gamma rays    1. Show parts in space where large amount of energy is released
Infrared waves 2. Show the heat released by astronomical objects
                         3. Detect collection of gas, dust, and plasma

Which of these best matches the waves with their applications?
A) Gamma rays—2 and infrared waves—3

B)Gamma rays—3 and infrared waves—2

C) Gamma rays—1 and infrared waves—2

D)Gamma rays—2 and infrared waves—1

The answer is C. Gamma rays are the highest energy electromagnetic waves in the electromagnetic spectrum. There are produced through radioactive nuclei decay (fission and fusion) that occurs in centers of stars. Infrared, on the other hand, is used to detect heat signatures. Infrared is produced by hot objects since its one way that heat is transferred from one place to another (apart from conduction and convection).
