Katya measured the growth of a plant seedling. The seedling grew 1/3 inch by the end of the first week and another 5 / 6 inch by the end of the second week. About how much did the seedling grow in the first 2 weeks? Explain how you made your estimate.

The seedling grew 1 1/6 inches or approximately 1.16 inches. 1/3 is equal to 2/6, 2/6 + 5/6 = 7/6
7/6 = 1 1/6

Answer:

The plant grew
(7)/(6) \ in, the first two weeks.

Explanation:

To find how much grew the plant in the first 2 weeks, we just have to sum both growth numbers.

In the first week it grew
(1)/(3) \ in.

The second week it grew
(5)/(6) \ in.

The total growth was:

(1)/(3) \ in+ (5)/(6) \ in=(6+15)/(18)=(21)/(18)=(7)/(6) \ in

Therefore, the plant grew
(7)/(6) \ in, the first two weeks.
