If a disconformity is present in a region then it is likely that the region experienced extensive and prolonged denudation. Denudation is the laying bare of the land by the processes of mass wasting, weathering and erosion. A disconformity is a type of unconformity involving a non-sequence of beds. Sedimentary rocks that were exposed to denudation over time has some strata removed and then has new strata deposited without a change in the underlying or subsequent overlaying rocks. This makes disconformities hard to identify.
