It increased British influence and trading rights to China would be the right answer. What happened was that British discovered a substance called opium and realized it was really addictive. So they started trading it to china and nearly 100% of china hooked on it. So Britain was making BANK off these Chinese people. The way China stopped the epidemic was that the government came out and said if we catch you using opium or even have it on you, then we'll shoot you on the spot. They ended up killing 80% of the population.
