Question: On July 4, 1776, Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence can be compared to a break up letter because Jefferson explained why America wanted its independence from King George III. Please read pages 516-520 in your textbook to discover why America wanted to be an independent country. You will write your own break up letter from the colonies to King George III. Your letter needs to be at least 5-7 sentences, include the issues/events leading up to this breaking point, and why the founding fathers felt independence would be better.

Since I can't see your textbook pages, here are some general reasons as to why American colonists wanted to break away from Great Britain.

1) Colonists did not like the fact that the British government made them quarter (aka provide housing) for soldiers. This could happen abruptly to colonists and they were unable to say no to these soldiers.

2) Imposing taxes without the colonists consent- This was one of the biggest reasons why the American colonists broke up with Britain. Colonists felt it was unfair to put a tax on popular goods without considering the citizens views on the matter.

3) Forcing the colonists to only trade with Britain. This limited the colonists economic opportunities.
