The core network (CN) in the 3g cellular data architecture connects radio access networks to the internet. It is the part of the UMTS network that provides internet service to final users. It is composed of the circuit switched (CS CN) and a packet switched core network (PS CN). In regards to the circuit switched core network, the mobile services centre (MSC) manages the user mobility. Most Mobile Broadband Networks around the world are currently delivering data services based on 3G and 4G technologies.

The RNC handles critical functions of the UMTS Terrestrial Radio access network including: call processing, link maintenance, mobility management, Radio Resource management, and support of mobile devices. It uses a high capacity switching platform and typically controls several cell base transceiver stations. It connects to the (CS CN) through Media Gateway (MGW).

The RNC architecture allows flexibility positioning and allows network operators to deploy a list of services and applications like real time voice and video conferencing. Through RNC Re-homing, the traffic of Voice Core Domain in the UMTS is optimized.
