The correct answer is histone deacetylation.
The DNA methyltransferase and proteins that bind to methylated DNA are associated with histone deacetylase. Those proteins form complexes with the proteins involved in deacetylation of histones and therefore, when DNA is methylated, nearby histones are deacetylated, which results in repression of transcription.
