The sum of two numbers is 65. If the first number is increased by 10% and the second one is increased by 20 percent the sum is 74. What are the original numbers?

The first number is 40 and the second is 25.

Explanation:

Let x = the first number

Then, 65 - x = the second number

So, [x+0.10x] + [(65-x) + 0.20(65-x)] = 74

1.1x + 65 - x + 13 - 0.2x = 74

-0.1x + 78 = 74

-0.1x = -4

x = 40
