Saint Benedict, founder of the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino and father of Western monasticism; the rule that he made turn out to be the norm for monastic living all over Europe which is the Benedictine Rule which led to the evolution of so many European republics in the Middle Ages. Pope Paul VI announced him the patron saint of all Europe.
