The correct answer is pedestrian/streetcar era

This is how early civilizations worked, the cities were small and compact because a large city would be useless if you had to walk for 10 hours to go from one place to another since there was only walking or using a horse or a donkey or a similar animal that could transport you. As transportation developed, so did the size of the cities.
