As I strolled to the carnival, I noticed that my town looked deserted. The usually hectic streets seemed lonely in the moonlight, and many of the businesses had closed so that everyone could enjoy the exhibition. The only sounds I heard were the echoes of music and cheering that arose from the park.

Why was the narrator surprised when she walked to the carnival?

A)
She heard noises coming from the park.

B)
She saw shadows on the walls of the tent.

C)
The moonlight lit up the streets in the town.

D)
It seemed as if she was alone on the streets.

The correct answer is: D) It seemed as if she was alone on the streets.

The narrator describes the emptiness of the streets while she is going to the carnival. By using the word "deserted" she states that there is no one there. We can see she is surprised because she compares this empty streets with the same streets in a normal day, which are described as "hectic" meaning that they are usually filled with activity and movement. Normally all the businesses are open and busy with people buying and selling, this day they are closed. As nobody is there, the normal sounds of a living city are not there either, this makes it possible for the author to hear things in the distance. All these descriptions give us the sensation of loneliness, the same sensation the author feels.
