Consolidation is the process of turning short-term memories into long-term memories. It occurs in 2 ways:

Synaptic consolidation- in which short term converts to long term over a couple hours after first acquisition

System consolidation- when hippocampus dependent memories exist independent of the hippocampus and this usually takes months or even years
