A second car renting company charges no flat fee but then charges customers $1.50 per mile they drive the car. Answer:

50 miles

Explanation:

Step one:

Given data

one-time fee of $50 and after pays $.50 for each additional mile driven

let number of miles be x

let total be y

Expression for first company

y=50+0.5x---------------1

Expression for second company

y=1.5x-------------------------2

Step two:

equate 1 and 2 above

50+0.5x=1.5x

collect like terms

50=1.5x-0.5x

50=x

x=50 miles

Hence a customer must drive at least 50 miles
