The | means how far the number is away from zero. For example, |-2| is 2 numbers away from zero, so it’s two

Absolute value.

Basically, you neglect the sign on the number and only consider the magnitude.

Consider the following examples:
|-7| = 7
|7| = 7
|2-3| = |-1| = 1
|3-2| = |1| = 1
