The Supreme Court ruled in favor of William Furman because Georgia had used the death penalty in a manner that showed a racial bias. In the opinions, several different Supreme Court justices wrote about the fact that the number of individuals who faced the death penalty was disproportionately African-American citizens.

With this factor in mind, it would be considered cruel and unusual punishment, which is something that all American citizens are protected from thanks to the 8th amendment.
