73=L+L-5
73=2L-5
+5 on both sides
78=2L
Divide 2 on both sides
39=L
Luke has 39.00
39-5=34
Sam has 34.00
Luke has $39. Then Sam's amount is $5 less so Sam has $34.

Sam has x.
Luke has x + 5.
The sum of x and x + 5 is 73
x + x + 5 = 73
2x + 5 = 73
2x = 68
x = 34
x + 5 = 39
Sam has $34.
Luke has $39.
