What kind of jurisdiction allows a district court to hear most federal criminal and civil cases?

I believe the answer is: original jurisdiction


Original jurisdiction refers to the right of the court to hear a case for the first time. This right usually belong to the court at lowest level. When a case is presented in original jurisdiction but still fail to obtain resolution, then the case could be appealed to the higher court.
