A writer best way to establish mood in a story is through a detailed setting.

A setting should depict the novel particular environmment: the sorrounding, and its looks, smell and pervading sounds.

For example to create the mood of despair, a writer should engage the audience with the descriptions that exemplifies such a mood.
For example, an old house, rugged clothing, scanty food, hungry faces of children.

The excerpt is "She turned back into the room and begam to walk to and fro down its whole length, without stopping, without resting. She carried in her hands a thin handkerchief which she tore into ribbons, rolled into a ball, and flung from her."

The answer is: B) Through a character's actions.

I just took the quiz on edg.
