The Roman Empire was the period that came after the Roman Republic. It had a government held by emperors with territorial holdings in Europe, Africa and Asia. The empire lasted approximately 1,500 years, with the two first centuries being particularly estable and peaceful (known as the "Pax Romana"). The Western part of the empire eventually collapsed in 480 AD and the Eastern part in 1453 with the fall of Contantinople to the Ottoman Turks.
