Hello there. I might add that this is maths and not geography but, oh well. c:

5x - 9 = - 23 ____________________ Add 9 to -9 (to cancel it out) and to -23 The equation now looks like this: ____________________ 5x = -14 ___________________ In order to solve for 'x' divede the coefficient of x with itself and what it's equivalent to. So it'll look like this: __________________- 5x/5 = x -14/5 = -2.8 x = -2.8 ______ Now check. You can do this by plugging in 'x' to the equation. ______ 5(-2.8) - 9 = -23 -14 - 9 = -23 -23 = -23 --- True.

I hope you'll be able to accomplish this on your own one day. Until then, goodbye!

5x - 9= -23
add 9 to both sides
5x - 9 + 9= -23 +9
negative and positive 9s cancel out
5x= -14
divide both sides by 5
5x/5= -14/5
5 over 5 is the same as 1
x= -14/5

CHECK:
5x - 9= -23
5(-14/5) - 9= -23
5 over 5 is the same as 1
-14 - 9= -23
-23= -23

ANSWER: x= -14/5

Hope this helps! :)
