Answer:
1.Why do you think that the first article begins with a description of Wonder Woman?
Wonder Woman is what most people picture when they think of the Amazons. The reason for this is because Wonder Woman has had a lot of publicity in DC comics and movies compared to Hippolyta or any other Amazon woman. So, by beginning the article by talking about her you draw your audience in with a familiar face in order to make them interested in reading about other Amazonians.
2.William Moulton Marston said, "Not even girls want to be girls so long as our feminine archetypes lack force, strength, and power." Does this quote reflect the myths described in the unit?
Female archetypes often don't get the same publicity as male archetypes. Their often sexualized more than idolized and while in recent years this has changed a little bit it still leaves girls with the idea that females are less capable than their male counterparts. It is important for, not just women, but all people to be sensitive and caring but when those characteristics are so often associated with the weakness it is hard to think of them as better than having strength and power. People who possess the latter can defend themselves, they are the ones who get to defend others and who are praised as amazing and called heroes. So, I agree that the quote reflects the myths because the Amazonians are strong and fierce and that is why they are used as such amazing role models and inspirations to girls.
3.Why do you think that some scholars perceived female-dominated societies as better than the current male-dominated ones?
Female comminated societies aren't inherently war hungry. Women would much rather settle an argument without having conflict but are willing to go to war if necessary. Another reason is that women are believed to be more compassionate and are better at taking care of others which are vital components of being a good leader. Problem-solving skills are superior when leading society and dealing with conflicts as opposed to brute strength.
4.Why do you think that the Amazons became so important in the founding myth of Athens?
Because it pinned the Amazons against the Athenians. The Attic war was the story of Hercules versus the Amazons but was adapted to include Theseus. The story goes, that the Amazons stormed after Theseus and attacked Athens in the process. Athens beating the Amazons showed how much of a powerhouse Athens was and how it was not to be taken lightly.
