The area is 30 units.

When you draw the hexagon, you can easily split it into 4 figures: a rectangle with dimensions 4 by 3 (area 12); a square with side length 3 (area 9); a rectangle with dimensions 2 by 3 (area 6) and a triangle with base 2 and height 3 (area 1/2*2*3 = 3). Adding the areas, we have 12 + 9 + 6 + 3 = 30.
